Product details
The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees 3-2 in Game 7 of the 1926 World Series on October 10, 1926, at Yankee Stadium in New York. This victory gave the Cardinals their first-ever World Series championship and handed the Yankees a stunning defeat that ended with one of the most famous plays in baseball history. In the 7th inning, Grover Cleveland Alexander came in with the bases loaded, two outs, and a one-run lead. Alexander, who had already pitched a complete game victory the day before, struck out Yankees slugger Tony Lazzeri to end the threat and then held the Yankees scoreless for the final two innings. Babe Ruth had a strong game, hitting his 8th career World Series home run. In the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs and the Cardinals still leading 3-2, Ruth drew a walk, bringing the potential winning run (Bob Meusel) to the plate and the powerful Lou Gehrig on deck. Ruth, in a surprising move, attempted to steal second base. Cardinals catcher Bob O'Farrell made a perfect throw to second baseman Rogers Hornsby, who tagged out Ruth to end the game and the series. This remains the only time a World Series has ended with a runner being caught stealing. This ticket is graded and encapsulated as a VG-EX 4 by PSA/DNA.
